WICUTIA… Oh Sh*t, We’re Complicit Too!

October 26, 2009

"No, these boots are UK-made, not those cheap Chinese knock-offs"

After all the hoo-rah over Chinese economic support for the very nasty Guinean military leadership, it appears that they’re not the only ones seeking to profit off a regime that uses force to keep itself in power: Alvis OMC, a South African company which is a subsidiary of Britain’s very own BAE Systems, sold the regime 10 Mamba armoured vehicles which were used in the just-slightly-OTT crack down on demonstrators. (Check out the vehicles caught in this footage here).

Oh those dastardly Brits! Them and the Chinese, eh?

But wait, what’s this? The Guardian goes on to report that “France, Portugal and Spain have reported to the UN Comtrade customs database that between 2006 and 2008 they made more than $5m (£3.1m) of exports to Guinea in categories covering ammunition and cartridges.”

When China sent arms to Zimbabwe, The West was all hysterical, upset and shocked, but didn’t stress too much about the western mining companies financially facilitating the Mugabe regime’s capacity for repression. Now the Chinese are accused of signing a mining (and oil) deal with the Guinea regime that financially facilities the regime’s capacity for repression and The West is all hysterical, upset and shocked. Will it get stressed that it’s providing the weapons to facilitate repression?

See here for the more details…  Err…. Whateverz.
