Oh Mrs. Palin, what happened to your life?

November 21, 2009

Poor Mrs. Palin. After hearing such promising forecasts about her book sales in the beginning of the week, it looks like her luck has finally dried up. Apparently most of the hoopla was due to below cost pre-sales from major online retailers, and for 9 bucks a pop, who wouldn’t buy one as a gag gift for their best friend’s Christmas present? We all deserve some Palin under our trees…

Also, is there a reason why she scheduled most of her book signings at stores like Costco, BJ’s and Sam’s Club? Oh, I know, she wants to prove she’s just an average American. But didn’t she know that those stores all require a paid membership to enter the building? So isn’t she excluding some of her less fortunate fans who can’t afford to shop at these ‘elitist’ bulk retailers…

Whatever Sarah, if you had half a brain, you would realize that you can grab a lot more sales by opening up your book signings to the general public. Some bookstores are even refusing to carry your collection of ground-breaking thoughts on ‘American Life’, so why aren’t you trying harder to include everyone. While some smaller non-chain bookstores are just declining based on practical sales reasons, others have chosen more personally opinionated rationales.

“Our customers are thinking people,” said Nathan Embretson, a bookseller at Pendragon Books in Oakland. “They’re not into reading drivel.”

My personal favorite: “Anything like that we wouldn’t carry,” said clerk Emily Stackhouse. “We’re a small store and it would probably gross us all out. Some things you carry because of freedom of speech, but a book like that is just gross.”

I almost feel sorry for her; her publisher probably filled her head up with all of this fanfare and made her believe she would actually be a success. Wait, screw that, I don’t feel sorry for someone for viciously undermines the current president by spreading lies and quits her job halfway through to Twitter and Facebook all day long. Please Sarah, why don’t you lecture me on responsibility again…

    Mike,

I’m going to go out on a limb here, but I think selling her book at below cost prices has something to do with her sales. This doesn’t speak well towards the quality of the book (when the retailers are desperate to sell) and in my opinion, it’s more of a joke buy than anything at those prices. But, I guess inflated sales because of bargain bin sales counts for success in her [and apparently your] mind.

But what planet was it that they ordered 300,000 more copies? I’m sorry, I don’t get news feeds from anywhere but Earth…please elaborate.

Try and keep an open mind on things rather than blind prejudice-it will serve you well as you get older and mature into more conservative thinking

Oh and that “selling below cost” is another liberal propaganda trick piece. Some outfits are “selling” the book at $4.95 but you have to take out a magazine subscription or pay the balance over time.

Oh no, I feel that from your use of the phrase ‘liberal propaganda trick’ that I might be responding to someone who just mindlessly regurgitates the rants of Bill O’Reilly and Rush Limbaugh, but I will give you the benefit of the doubt. I think this argument might be pointless since you’ve previously stated the ‘right way’ of thinking is more conservative, but let’s address the fact that the article you linked has no mention of the price it is actually being sold for. All of the amounts are projected and mere speculations of what a normal book should have sold for, not one that was so hyped up that if it failed would mean a complete mockery an entire network of pundits.

Your article states: But HarperCollins will be making money long before that. There’s a rule of thumb in the industry that publishers net about $10 per hardcover sold, after expenses, but before the cost of the advance.

If the books aren’t even selling for $10…WHERE’S THE NET PROFIT?
Looks like someone’s not going to be making good on her advance…

I can see there is no point in discussing something with someone whose mind is closed.the bookshops on the tour are selling around $19 ( you can,if you are openminded enough to check out the tour photo’s of the book table) and would hardly sell at a loss.Nope, sorry for your mistaken premise, both Harper collins and Mrs.Palin are doing very well.Cheerio

Thanks Mike, I was actually going to suggest the same to you…I feel people like you try and project the same argument, “everyone who disagrees with me is close-minded and I am the one who is open-minded and it makes me feel better inside about my views”. I guess that is what the FOX Brainwashing School tends to teach.

But we can agree to disagree and I am content with that.
What the Palin-ites lack in reality-based thinking, they make up for in stamina…and I feel she does a great disservice to her followers by distorting facts and propagating fear. Whenever Mrs. Palin is outed for her obvious exaggerations of the truth, it is always a ‘liberal propaganda trick’ because everyone is out to get her. Someday she [and her followers] will eventually concede to the fact that she is just not telling the truth. Well, probably not, but a girl can dream…

P.S. I took your advice and peeked at Sarah’s book tour (to prove to you how open-minded I am), and I just wondered how you thought using her 18 CITY BOOK TOUR as an argument would be valid in making your point. I apologize, 18 whole bookshops would definitely make a difference in her net profits. Thank you for bringing that my attention 🙂

Just out of curiosity, why isn’t she stopping in Alaska…aren’t those HER people? I guess they just took the role of the ‘first wife’, you know the one you dump once you get rich and famous for the hotter, younger one.

Wow – incredible the myopia from folks on the left. Let me see if I can make this clear for you – Sarah Palin is the ONLY politician that I’m aware of who talks about: 1) energy independence; 2) fiscal conservatism, i.e., balancing budgets; and 3) upholding the constitution of the U.S. THIS is why people like her, you dolt.

    poppycock!

people like her because she’s a spectacle. she’s political drama, a novelty, a shiny new toy for the masses.
she doesn’t talk about issues, she tries to (and really is terrible at it). Actually Ron Paul does talk about energy independence, fiscal conservatism, and upholding the constitution…so maybe you should go out and read more.

this isn’t an issue of liberal hate or whatever the convies think, i mean if she was actually intelligent, and actually knows what the hell is spewing out of her mouth, then there would not be a strong case against her.

however, shes dumb. shockingly dumb. but hot. wonderfully hot.

who cares really, she’s a fad. these things don’t last.

You liberals (oops, that’s a bad word)… you saocialist progressives don’t have a clue. Read her book. Another book (which is better) is “The Persecution of Sarah Palin”, Matthew Continetti. Read it & you’ll better understand why she is so hated.

The socialist agenda has failed every time it’s ever been tried the world around. Socialism never has worked and it never will. Read your history and you’ll agree.

Interesting to read these comments at the end of 2011. It’s laughable to see people defending Palin at this point and to truly see how misguided these, older, more mature, and seemingly wiser conservatives are.

As for socialism being a failure?? How about Canada? They seem to be doing well with their socialist’s ways. Their dollar is almost exactly the value of ours.

    So where’s the brilliant-forward thinking Palin today? Oh that’s right, she’s a non-issue.
