The Unbearable Threat of HyperSexualized Femininity: Why Amanda Knox is the Modern Day Joan of Arc

December 22, 2009

Amanda Knox

Two years ago, on Halloween, British exchange student Meredith Kercher was found murdered in her bedroom in Perugia, Italy, her throat slashed open in what was later to be described as a ‘sex attack’. Earlier this month, Amanda Knox, her young and beautiful American roomate, was charged with the murder and sentenced to 26 years in prison.

In the two years in between, the narrative of ‘Foxy Knoxy’ was born, an overblown media portrayal of Knox as a sociopathic ultra-sexual temptress that killed her innocent and subdued roomate in a jealous, sex-fuelled fury. The problem is, evidence is inconclusive, and doesn’t really point to Knox being the murderer (in fact, the probable murderer, Rudy Guede, was jailed a year ago).

Also, Italian juries are not sequestered, which means that they’re often exposed to all the media rumours that, in this case, were salacious, wild, and more often than not unsubstantiated. This, combined with the machismo, totally Italian, and arguably anti-woman attitude that surrounded this case, Knox stood little chance, even though there is absolutely zero physical evidence linking her to the murder itself.

Since then, many have spoken out about the problems of the trial itself. Equal Writes summarizes the dialogue quite well, arguing that Amanda Knox was persecuted for her beauty as much as for her alleged murdering of Meredith Kercher. The New York Times’ Timothy Egan went a bit further in his anger over the prosecution’s description of Knox as a “dirty-minded she-devil:

Joan of Arc...Amanda Knox?

“What century is this? Didn’t Joan of Arc, the Inquisition and our own American Salem witch trials teach civilized nations a thing or two about contrived sexual hysteria with a devil twist?”

And that’s precisely it, really. At the end of the day, the Italian justice system, the police, and the Italian (and to a lesser degree, international) media all helped lead Amanda Knox to the proverbial stake. In closing arguments, Knox was described as a “Luciferina” and a “dirty minded she-devil”. One prosecutor speculated before the jury that Knox may have said to Meredith Kercher before she may have raped and killed her “You are always behaving like a little saint. Now we will show you. Now we will make you have sex.”

The thing is, she never said that, but repeating statements such as these, as well as showing a 3D Second Life style ‘re-enactment’ of how Knox could possibly maybe but probably not have raped and killed Kercher. All it takes is an image, a story line, a narrative, and the myth of an out of control, highly sexualised young girl leads to a mob mentality to subdue, control, and eliminate her.

At the same time, let’s not be naive. There is also plenty of evidence that Knox was promiscuous, a party-girl, spoilt, maybe a bit of a bitch. But was she a murderer? Probably not,  but in the face of Italian sexism and the desperate need to save face, does it really matter anymore what she’s on trial for, so long as we lock up the vag we can’t control.

So while you are filling your beautiful bellies with food and drink this Christmas, spare a thought for Amanda Knox, our very own Joan of Arc.

A very sensible post. I hadn’t thought of the Italian machismo element. I knowa few young girls like Amanda: hard-working and caring, but also spoiled and self-centered.

I get the impression Amanda was very sheltered and nobody seems to have told her the facts of life. Don’t hop into bed with a new guy right away, don’t do drugs anywhere except your own home (and don’t buy the on the street), and above all, go slow when you’re in a new culture. For instance, Amanda didn’t seem to realize her new roommates came from different cultures that deserved respect.

But you’re absolutely right. Her trial was a travesty.

Great post – however have yet to find any substantiated facts following all these rumours re Amanda and anyway do they matter? Demolition through character assassination is a weak way to go – and from what I can see Amanda is a kind and loving girl – but that’s irrelevant – to make it into something to convict someone (in fact two people) of murder is truly scary.

what a joke! can’t complain, this is a ‘blog’ and no journalist’s work journalist do research on the subject they write about, this is creative writing at best. Yes, there was a ton of dna …. the american media is leaving a lot of little details out. For the only-english speakimg people I recommend articles on Brittish or australian newspapers which can be found in google news.

Why the British articles? They’re as much as biased as the Italian media. Just look at Daily Mail and The Sun UK.. You think they’re reliable? Australian media haven’t been biased I can tell you that, the trial with no physical evidence against the two but only pointing to one person only. The media here in Aus, isn’t as much as gone into a frenzy like what this article has said.

And so now British and Australian media are the authority on truth!!
Jesus, get with the programme, girl. MEDIA has been manipulating the subjectivity (and objectivity) of truth since its inception. I suggest a degree in Philosophy or at least cultural relativism before one deems themselves even capable at levying a theorisation of the ‘truth’.

Whilst I feel sorry for all people who may have suffered a gross miscarriage of justice, I prefer to spare a thought this Christmas for those who don’t have half the English-speaking world, including many politicians, fighting their case.

sysh, this machismo bit would hold if it wasn’t skipping a tiny, little thing: in Italy nobody holds Amanda as the only killer, the press always talks of “Amanda and Raffaele”, she’s much more of a lonely star in the reports of UK press than back there.

I am very sad for Amanda Knox…i want her out of prison. I want us all to will this girl out of prison. I know that she did not do it. I know. I KNOW IT. When i first saw the trial before she was convicted i knew she was innocent…and when she got put in jail my heart ached for her…my heart is aching for her now. She reminds me of me and the very idea that everything that happened to her got completely misconstrued to a point where she was charged with murder is maddening. It’s obvious the people in Italy where this occurred do not understand modern technology or how DNA evidence works. I am baffled about the entire situation.

If anybody knows Amanda and can somehow communicate to her in prison please tell her that I said hello and i am not going to forget about her…I dont know her personally but she is having to be a victim to a system of beliefs that dont work. Amanda, ITS OK. YOU ARE INNOCENT!

  7. January 7, 2010 6:01 pm

another comment i must make after reading a few of the posts here…all of you who want to keep judging Amanda Knox,,,i hope the amount of judgement you use on her comes back on you TENFOLD and for every time you judge her something happens to you to remind you of how wrong you are for judging Amanda.

Who really cares what any of you think of Amanda? If Italy was not so stupid to put an innocent girl in prison for murder none of you would even know who she is so i suggest everyone keep their mouths shut or plan to face some serious WRATH.

another vengeful spiteful feminazi that can’t believe there can be love triangles and sexual predators like amanda knox out there that will give all women, who are just naturally always “right and good”, a bad name. you people need to get over it and move on. by willing that your joan of arc idol be found innocent and freed from her horrid imprisonment will not make it so. plain and simple this chick was a jealous slut who killed her competition for her italian lover. it is as simple as that. she had the motive, means, and opportunity. quit trying to demonize italian culture as being macho and chauvinistic . at least the men there still have a pair and aren’t chemically emasculated like males in the usa and britain where the PC speech has all but removed free speech because it offends too many frigid man haters!!!

‘a jealous slut’. Well, just how redneck American are we.??!!! I feel for you deeply, deeply. Just another American casulty, how sad. No wonder the ‘all American guy’ is reviled in the Europe. Monkies, just regurgitating the same old repetitive narratives that slaughtered a whole generation of true ‘natives’, those being patronisingly named ‘Native American Indians’. Ultimately, the U.S.A is a founded on the basis of colonialist hooliganism. Don’t fool yourselves.

Rachel, you know what? Anything you write sounds just like “only here in US we know how to use DNA technology and can properly trial people”.

The amount of people wrongly killed ’cause your trials are not that just nor fair, nor technically perfect says it all.

If you have any proper argument to support Amanda’s case why don’t you just present it?

The evidence against Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito is overwhelming.

Amanda Knox’s DNA was found on:

    1. On the double DNA knife and a number of independent forensic experts – Dr. Patrizia Stenoni, Dr. Renato Biondo and Professor Francesca Torricelli – categorically stated that Meredith’s DNA was on the blade.

    2. Mixed with Meredith’s blood on the ledge of the basin.

    3. Mixed with Meredith’s blood on the bidet.

    4. Mixed with Meredith blood on a box of Q Tip cotton swabs.

    5. Mixed with Meredith’s blood in the hallway.

    6. Mixed with Meredith’s blood on the floor of Filomena’s room, where the break-in was staged.

    7. On Meredith’s bra according to Raffaele Sollecito’s forensic expert, Professor Vinci.

Amanda Knox’s footprints were found set in Meredith’s blood in two places in the hallway of the new wing of the cottage. One print was exiting her own room, and one print was outside Meredith’s room, facing into the room. These bloody footprints were only revealed under luminol.

A woman’s bloody shoeprint, which matched Amanda Knox’s foot size, was found on a pillow under Meredith’s body. The bloody shoeprint was incompatible with Meredith’s shoe size.

Two independent imprint experts categorically excluded the possibility that the bloody footprint on the blue bathmat could belong to Rudy Guede. Lorenzo Rinaldi stated: ““You can see clearly that this bloody footprint on the rug does not belong to Mr. Guede, but you can see that it is compatible with Sollecito.”

The other imprint expert print expert testified that the bloody footprint on the blue bathmat matched the precise characteristics of Sollecito’s foot.

An abundant amount of Raffaele Sollecito’s DNA was found on Meredith’s bra clasp. Meredith’s bra was removed some time after she had been killed and Rudy Guede had fled the scene.

The murder dynamic implicates Knox and Sollecito.

    Barbie Nadeau wrote the following:

“Countless forensic experts, including those who performed the autopsies on Kercher’s body, have testified that more than one person killed her based on the size and location of her injuries and the fact that she didn’t fight back—no hair or skin was found under her fingernails.”

Judge Paolo Micheli claimed that Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito knew precise details about Meredith’s murder that they could have only known if they were present when she was killed.

Amanda Knox voluntarily admitted that she involved in Meredith’s murder in her handwritten note to the police on 6 November 2007. She stated on at least four separate occasions that she was the cottage when Meredith was killed.

Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito both gave multiple conflicting alibis and lied repeatedly. Their lies were exposed by telephone and computer records, and by CCTV footage. Neither Knox nor Sollecito have credible alibis for the night of the murder despite three attempt each.

Legal expert Stefano Maffei stated the following:

“There were 19 judges who looked at the evidence over the course of two years, faced with decisions on pre-trial detention, review of such detention, committal to trial, judgment on criminal responsibility. They all agreed, at all times, that the evidence was overwhelming.”

  10. February 11, 2010 8:49 am

I am not American and I read nothing but UK and European news until after the actual conviction and still arrived at the conclusion that the trial was a farce. I don’t know what the Italians are afraid of, they screwed up but will never admit it.

The ‘overwhelming’ evidence is another blogger fantasy, there is little evidence that would be acceptable in a UK court. The US justice system is based on English common law so they probably wouldn’t have allowed half of the testimony permitted in Amanda’s trial.

I think she’ll be acquitted eventually.

“The Unbearable Threat of HyperSexualized Femininity: Why Amanda Knox is the Modern Day Joan of Arc”

Indeed, especially given the way she lied and blamed everything on a black male. Truly she is the Joan of Arc of our time. My goodness what a threat her femininity is. What is is even more amazing is the current level of insanity, female sexism and nationalism that exists today. yes, white american women are never guilty. Also we as men must fear the Hyper sexualized femininity. Of course, yes, we must. Much like Foxy Knoxy, there are indeed many liers in the world. Though none bigger thant the man hating feminists and their suedo science and mentally ill perspective on the human life. Sick animals, Amanda and all of you!

    Oh please…smh at this article.

Persecuted for what beauty? She is as plain as can be. As a woman, I feel no sympathy for her.

Just another entitled white woman who blames others when she finds herself in trouble. My sympathy is reserved for the REAL victim, Meredith Kercher.
