Osama bin Laden and Al Gore: Dual Environmental Warriors Against Climate Change?

February 10, 2010

Going green isn’t just for the tree-hugging hippies anymore.

Who knew Osama bin Laden was a Chomsky-reading, American dollar-hating, undercover agent against climate change? Well, maybe we knew about the American dollar part…but, now it seems like the world’s most infamous terrorist has a soft spot for Mother Nature.

In his second message sent to the public within weeks, bin Laden stated, “Noam Chomsky was correct when he compared the U.S. policies to those of the Mafia. They are the true terrorists, and therefore we should refrain from dealing in the U.S. dollar and should try to get rid of this currency as early as possible.”

The nefarious leader of al-Queda also slammed the U.S. and other “industrialized countries, especially the big ones” for not bearing enough responsibility in their contribution to global warming.

Ick, did you ever in a million years think you would utter the words: I have something in common with Osama bin Laden. So what gives? Is this just another excuse to slam the U.S. or does bin Laden’s global image need a public relations pick-me-up? A topic like climate change strikes an emotional chord in citizens of developing countries that are most susceptible to environmental catastrophes…so should we be worried that he is gaining sympathizers around the globe?

The thought of big, bad bin Laden standing up for the “little guy” who has no control over the decisions made by industrialized countries is a scary thought, but is this even the angle he is going for? It’s impossible to get in that guy’s head because his thoughts are all over the place.

Statements like, “the effects of global warming have touched every continent. Drought and deserts are spreading, while from the other floods and hurricanes unseen before the previous decades have now become frequent” sure make it seem that way.

Bridging the gap one youtube clip at a time.

Will an international shaming by America’s #1 adversary sway the stubborn minds of the  U.S. Congress to pass climate change legislation? Of course not, but the Obama administrations mandating of a 28% emissions cut from 2008 levels by 2020 for all federal government departments is a good start.

Now let’s work on that cap and trade thingy…maybe we can call in Whitney Houston to negotiate, after all she seems to cross all political and idealogical boundaries.
